How to Get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh: Bus, Train or Tour?
Ninh Binh
Here are several ways to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh in 2026.

Sorry, what was that? You’re ready for a break from the chaos of Hanoi’s Old Quarter? The traffic, busy streets, and endless beeping motorbikes?

Well we have the perfect destination for you and it's only a short ride away!

Ninh Binh is just the place you’re after. It has skyscraping limestone mountains, winding rivers, and miles of peaceful countryside that feels a world away from the capital, with routes you can explore by bicycle.

But what's the best way to get there? You can hop on a bus, take the train, arrange a private transfer, or let someone else handle the planning with an organised tour.

In this guide, we'll compare the different ways to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, including journey times, costs, and the pros and cons of each option.

That way, you can spend less time figuring out transport and more time deciding which boat trip to take.

How Far Is Ninh Binh from Hanoi?

Ninh Binh is approximately 95–100 km south of Hanoi by road, making it an easy addition to a Northern Vietnam itinerary.

The journey generally takes around two to three hours, depending on your transport, departure point, and traffic.

One thing to know before booking: Ninh Binh can refer to both the city and the wider province. Many travellers heading here are actually staying in Tam Coc or visiting Trang An, where you'll find the famous limestone scenery and boat trips.

This matters when choosing transport. A train takes you to Ninh Binh Railway Station, but you'll still need to arrange transport to your accommodation.

Some buses and limousine vans, on the other hand, can drop you much closer to where you're staying (some even to the door!).

Different Ways to Get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

There are several ways to make the journey, depending on your budget, schedule, and how much planning you want to do yourself.

If you'd rather spend your time exploring instead of sorting out transport and tickets, an organised tour is worth considering first.

1. Book a Guided Tour with Bong Hostel

If you're short on time or would rather not organise every detail yourself, booking a guided tour is one of the easiest ways to visit Ninh Binh from Hanoi.

Instead of arranging transport between attractions, finding places to eat, and working out how much you can fit into one day, you can let someone else handle the logistics.

Bong Hostel offers both a full-day Ninh Binh tour and a two-day, one-night option, depending on how much time you have available.

Bong Hostel's Ninh Binh Full-Day Tour

Pick up: Between 7:15 am and 8:00 am

Return to Hanoi: At approximately 7:00–7:30 pm

Price: from 1,050,000 VND per person (at time of publishing)

Bong's Ninh Binh full-day tour itinerary combines several of the region's highlights into one day:

  • Hoa Lu Ancient Capital: Explore the historic temples of King Dinh and King Le.

  • Countryside cycling: Enjoy a ride through villages and the surrounding landscape.

  • Tam Coc boat trip: Take a sampan ride along the river, surrounded by limestone mountains and rice fields.

  • Hang Mua Cave viewpoint: Climb nearly 500 steps to enjoy panoramic views over the countryside.

The tour includes a limousine transfer with pick-up and drop-off in Hanoi's Old Quarter, an English-speaking guide, mineral water on the bus, a buffet lunch, and the use of a hat or raincoat during the trip.

Drinks with lunch, tips, and personal expenses are not included.

It's a full day, but you get to experience several different sides of Ninh Binh without having to plan every detail yourself.

Prefer to Stay in Ninh Binh Overnight?

If you'd rather not squeeze everything into one day, Bong also has a 2-day, 1-night Ninh Binh tour from 3,950,000 VND per person (at time of publishing).

This option also covers Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, a Tam Coc boat ride, countryside cycling, and views from Hang Mua Cave.

But on Day 2 you will also visit the Bai Dinh Pagoda, followed by an afternoon boat trip in the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.

An overnight trip gives you more time to enjoy the region without having to return to Hanoi that same evening.

2. Take a Bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

For backpackers who want an affordable, straightforward journey, taking a bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is a popular choice.

There are several services connecting Hanoi with Ninh Binh, including tourist buses and smaller limousine vans.

If you book your bus through Bong Hostel, it’s possible to get picked up from our hostel in the heart of Hanoi Old Quarter and travel directly to Tam Coc or Trang An.

How Long Does the Bus Take?

Allow approximately two to three hours, although traffic and additional pick-ups can affect the journey.

Each time I’ve taken the bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh (three times) I’ve travelled in a limousine van, which was a really comfortable and simple way to travel between the two destinations.

It was also possible to get dropped off outside my accommodation.

How Much Does the Bus Cost?

Fares vary depending on the operator, vehicle, departure point, and destination. On my trips, I paid 400,00 VND for a one-way journey through Bong Hostel.

If you want to book a smooth trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, pop by Bong Hostel to check the available services, departure times, and prices, and they can help you work out an option that suits your plans.

Pros and Cons of Taking the Bus

Pros

  • Generally affordable, with plenty of operators to compare.

  • Some services offer convenient pick-up and drop-off points.

  • No need to organise your own driving or navigate unfamiliar roads.

Cons

  • Journey times can vary with traffic and pick-up stops.

  • Luggage space depends on the vehicle.

  • Your arrival point might not be close to your accommodation.

3. Take the Train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Fancy a slightly more relaxed way to travel? Taking the train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is another good option, particularly if you enjoy watching the countryside roll past your window.

Trains run along Vietnam's north–south railway, connecting the capital with destinations further down the country. Ninh Binh is one of the stops along the route.

How Long Does the Train Take?

The journey generally takes around two to three hours. Exact departure times and journey durations depend on the service, so check the timetable for your intended travel date.

You can check available services through Vietnam Railway Booking before deciding which departure suits your plans.

How Much Does the Train Cost?

Ticket prices depend on the service and seat category. Standard seats are generally a budget-friendly option, while softer seats are simply more comfy.

Rather than relying on an old price list, check the available fares when booking. Prices and availability can change depending on demand and your travel date.

Where Does the Train Arrive?

Trains arrive at Ninh Binh Railway Station, in Ninh Binh city.

If you're staying in Tam Coc or exploring Trang An, you'll need to arrange onward transport.

Pros and Cons of Taking the Train

Pros

  • A relaxed alternative to travelling by road.

  • A chance to see more of the countryside along the way.

  • A good option if you prefer having a reserved seat for your journey.

Cons

  • You'll need to reach Hanoi Railway Station before departure.

  • The train station isn't necessarily close to your final destination.

  • You'll need to organise transport from Ninh Binh Railway Station to your accommodation.

The train is a great choice if you enjoy travelling independently and don't mind arranging a transfer at the other end.

However, if your main priority is getting straight to your accommodation in Tam Coc, compare the total journey with a direct option first.

4. Book a Private Car or Taxi

If you'd rather travel on your own schedule, a private car is another option.

Instead of travelling with a group, you can arrange a vehicle to collect you in Hanoi and take you directly to your accommodation in Ninh Binh.

This can be particularly useful if you're travelling with family, have lots of luggage, or simply prefer not to deal with public transport.

How Long Does a Private Transfer Take?

Allow around two hours in typical conditions, although traffic can make the journey longer.

You'll still need to agree on a pick-up time and exact destination with your driver or transfer provider.

How Much Does a Private Transfer Cost?

Private transfers are usually more expensive than individual bus or train tickets. The final price depends on the vehicle, pick-up location, destination, and provider.

If you're travelling with friends, compare the total price of a car against the cost of individual tickets.

Splitting the fare between several people can make a private transfer more reasonable than it first appears.

Pros and Cons of a Private Transfer

Pros

  • Pick-up and drop-off can be arranged around your accommodation.

  • More privacy and flexibility.

  • Convenient for families, groups, and travellers with lots of luggage.

Cons

  • Usually more expensive than public transport.

  • You need to arrange the booking in advance.

  • Stops and changes to the route may cost extra.

A private car is worth considering if convenience matters more to you than finding the cheapest possible ticket.

5. Ride a Motorbike to Ninh Binh

Technically, yes, you can ride a motorbike from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. But whether you should is another question.

Riding a motorbike gives you flexibility over your route and the freedom to stop whenever something catches your eye.

However, travelling between Hanoi and Ninh Binh involves busy roads, and navigating traffic around the capital can be challenging if you're not experienced riding in Vietnam.

You also need to consider your licence, the legal requirements for riding in Vietnam, and whether your travel insurance covers you for the specific bike and circumstances.

If you're not a confident, appropriately licensed rider, we'd recommend choosing a bus, train, or organised tour instead.

You can always explore the Ninh Binh countryside by motorbike once you arrive, rather than making the journey from Hanoi itself part of the adventure.

Ask the Bong team about prices, departure times, and drop-off points when arranging your trip, as these details can vary.

Should You Visit Ninh Binh on a Day Trip or Stay Overnight?

You can absolutely visit Ninh Binh on a day trip from Hanoi. The relatively short journey makes it possible to leave in the morning, explore several attractions, and return in the evening.

However, if you have the time, we'd recommend considering an overnight stay.

Ninh Binh isn't just about ticking off the main sights. There's also the countryside, the local food, and the quieter corners that are easy to rush past when you're watching the clock.

Staying overnight gives you more flexibility and means you won't have to fit everything into one very busy day.

Tips for Planning Your Hanoi to Ninh Binh Journey

Whichever transport you choose, a little preparation can make the journey much easier.

  • Check your arrival point. Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc, and Trang An aren't interchangeable destinations. Make sure your transport takes you where you actually want to go.

  • Book ahead when needed. Check availability for your dates, particularly if you're travelling during busy periods or have a specific departure time in mind.

  • Allow some flexibility. Traffic and transport schedules can change, so avoid planning another important booking too close to your expected arrival.

  • Keep essentials handy. Bring water, your phone, a charger, and any valuables you want to keep with you during the journey.

  • Think about your onward transport. If you're taking the train, check how you'll reach your accommodation. If you're travelling by bus, confirm the drop-off point.

  • Support local businesses. Once you arrive, consider eating at local restaurants, buying from small businesses, and treating the countryside and communities you visit with respect.

A little planning now means less faffing about when you arrive.
