But on Day 2, you'll also visit a local school, bringing practical gifts including weather-appropriate clothing and useful supplies, cooking with the community, playing games, and spending time with the children.

And the best bit? It doesn't cost you anything extra.

The tour is the same price as Bong Hostel's classic Ha Giang Loop, with Bong covering the additional charity costs.

So you get the adventure, and the chance to give something back to the communities that make the Ha Giang Loop so special.

What is Bong Hostel's Charity Tour?

A Ha Giang Loop Tour With a Little More Heart

Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour is a special edition of our usual Ha Giang Loop experience, designed to combine the adventure travellers come to northern Vietnam for with a meaningful opportunity to support a local community.

This isn't a separate week-long volunteering programme.

You aren't signing up to spend four days painting a school while your motorbike gets lonely.

And you certainly aren't being asked to arrive with a suitcase full of donations.

Instead, the charity element is built into the normal Ha Giang Loop itinerary.

You'll spend most of the trip doing exactly what you'd expect from a Bong Hostel Ha Giang Loop:

• Riding through the mountains with your Easy Rider.

• Stopping at spectacular viewpoints.

• Passing through remote villages.

• Eating far too much delicious Vietnamese food.

• Staying in local homestays.

• Swimming, exploring and wandering around the countryside.

• Getting to know the people you're travelling with.

• Laughing at things that definitely weren't funny enough to laugh that hard at.

• Wondering how a road can possibly be classified as a road.

Then, on Day 2, you'll visit a local school and spend some time giving back.

It's the Ha Giang Loop you wanted to do, with one day that gives you a chance to do something a little different. And that's exactly the point.

Why Is Bong Hostel Running a Charity Tour?

Ha Giang isn't just a pretty backdrop for your motorbike photos. It's home.

It's home to families, farmers, teachers, homestay owners, mechanics, drivers, shopkeepers, craftspeople and communities who have lived in these mountains for generations.

And tourism has become an increasingly important part of the region.

Every year, thousands of travellers come to experience the Ha Giang Loop. They eat local food, sleep in local homestays, hire local drivers, buy things from local businesses, and spend money in the ethnic communities along the route.

That's a good thing.

Tourism creates jobs and opportunities, and it allows travellers from all over the world to experience somewhere they might otherwise never have seen.

But if we're going to benefit from a place, we think it's worth asking a simple question: How can we give something back, too?

That's where Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour comes in.

Rather than simply telling travellers to "travel responsibly", we wanted to create an opportunity where responsible travel becomes something you can actually experience.

You don't have to do anything complicated to join this tour… You don't have to be a qualified teacher, you don't need a background in charity work, and you don't need to empty your bank account.

You just need to turn up, be respectful, get involved, and have a good time.

We'll take care of the rest.

What Happens on Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour?

It's Still the Ha Giang Loop

Before we get too carried away with the wholesome stuff, let's clear something up: this is still a Ha Giang Loop tour.

You'll get the towering limestone mountains, winding roads, local villages, homestays, spectacular viewpoints, fun easy riders, and great food.

The difference? Day 2 includes a special visit to a local school, where you'll have the chance to spend time with the children, help cook, play games and deliver practical gifts provided by Bong Hostel.

So yes, you're still getting the Loop you came for. We're just adding a little more meaning along the way.

Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour: 4-Day, 3-Night Itinerary

So, what does the Bong Hostel Charity Tour actually look like? Here's the full Loop at a glance:

Day 1: Bong Hostel → Yên Minh

After breakfast and a quick briefing at Bong Hostel, you'll meet your guide and Easy Rider and head into the mountains.

Your first stops include:

• Bac Sum Pass – your first taste of Ha Giang's famous winding mountain roads.

• Quan Ba Heaven Gate – panoramic views across the valley.

• Twin Mountains – one of Quan Ba's most recognisable landscapes.

• Dao village lunch – tuck into a local mountain meal.

• Lung Tam Village – discover traditional Hmong linen weaving and natural dyeing.

• A hidden local village – meet local children and try your hand at traditional folk games.

You'll arrive in Yên Minh around 5:30 PM, where you can shower, relax, enjoy dinner and Happy Water, and get ready for the big day ahead.

Day 2: Yên Minh → Pả Vi

Charity, Ma Pi Leng and some seriously epic views.

Day 2 is the heart of Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour.

You'll start with a morning ride over the dramatic Nine-Turn Pass, before heading to a local school or community space for the charity experience.

Visiting a Local School

This is where you'll swap a few hours of sightseeing for something a little more meaningful.

Bong Hostel will provide weather-appropriate clothing and practical gifts for the children, and you'll have the chance to help us deliver them, spend time with the kids, play games, and help prepare and share a meal.

The focus is on practical support and genuine connection, rather than simply dropping off donations and leaving.

You'll cook together, play together, laugh together, and, most importantly, spend some proper time with the local community.

And you don't need to bring anything or pay anything extra to take part.

Bong Hostel covers the additional cost of the charity initiative, so the tour costs exactly the same as our normal Ha Giang Loop.

Once you've finished at the school and refuelled with lunch, it's back on the bikes for one of the Loop's biggest highlights: Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Ride along the legendary Happiness Road, stop at the viewpoint and gaze down towards the emerald Nho Quế River and Tu San Canyon.

Then it's onwards to Pả Vi Hmong Village, where you'll spend the night in a traditional-style clay homestay.

Day 3: Pả Vi → Du Già

Off the beaten path.

After the excitement of charity day, you'll head away from the busier sections of the Loop towards Mậu Duệ and Ngọc Long Valley.

Expect rugged mountain scenery, quiet roads and plenty of opportunities to wonder how your Easy Rider knows where they're going.

The highlight? Lunch on a bamboo raft in Ngọc Long Valley, surrounded by limestone mountains and peaceful waterways.

After lunch, continue through winding mountain roads, streams and rice terraces before arriving in Du Già, where you'll settle into your homestay and enjoy a family-style dinner.

Day 4: Du Già → Ha Giang City

One last adventure before the Loop comes to an end.

Your final day takes you through the remote villages around Minh Sơn and Minh Ngọc, where the dramatic limestone landscape begins to give way to greener hills.

Then it's time to swap two wheels for the water with a river boat cruise and lunch, followed by a refreshing swim at a hidden waterfall.

After one final ride through the mountains, you'll arrive back at Bong Hostel in Ha Giang City in the late afternoon.

Four days, three nights. Hundreds of kilometres of mountain roads. One unforgettable school visit. 

And hopefully a little more appreciation for the people and communities that make the Ha Giang Loop what it is.

Why Are the Gifts Focused on Weather and Practical Needs?

If you've only visited northern Vietnam during the warmer months, it can be easy to forget just how much conditions can change in the mountains.

Ha Giang isn't a tropical beach region in Vietnam. Temperatures can drop significantly, and mountain weather can be unpredictable.

That's why this year's charity programme is focused on practical, weather-appropriate support.

Bong Hostel is working with the local community to understand what is actually useful, from suitable clothing to practical supplies.

We're not interested in turning up with a giant bag of random stuff and announcing, "Surprise! We bought 300 things nobody asked for!"

Although we're sure there'll still be plenty of photographs.

Do I Have to Donate Money to Join Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour?

Nope. Not even a little bit.

There is no additional charity fee. The September departures cost the same as Bong Hostel's normal Ha Giang Loop tour, with Bong covering the additional costs of the charity initiative.

You don't need to bring donations, raise money or arrive with a suitcase full of supplies.

Your contribution is your time, enthusiasm, and willingness to get involved.

We'll handle the shopping, planning, and logistics. You just need to show up and bring your best game face.

Is This Responsible Travel on the Ha Giang Loop?

We Think It Should Be

Responsible travel doesn't have to mean travelling with a strict list of Dos and Don’ts. Sometimes it simply means thinking a little harder about how you experience a place.

On the Ha Giang Loop, that might mean respecting local customs, asking before taking photographs, and thinking carefully about how you interact with local children.

And sometimes, it means joining a structured community initiative where your time and support can be genuinely useful.

That's what we're trying to create with Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour.

Not a performative volunteering experience. Just an opportunity to meet people, spend time together, and provide some practical support.

Why We Don't Encourage Giving Money to Children on the Road

This is something Bong Hostel has spoken about before, and it's worth repeating because it's an important part of responsible travel in Ha Giang.

When you're riding the Loop, you may see children along the roadside. They might wave, smile or even ask for money or sweets.

It can be incredibly tempting to give something.

Your heart says: "Give them EVERYTHING!!"

But good intentions don't always create good outcomes.

Regular handouts can encourage children to approach tourists specifically for money or gifts, potentially turning normal interactions with travellers into something dependent on tourism. That's not the kind of relationship we want to encourage.

A structured programme like Bong Hostel’s Charity Tour is different.

The visit is organised in advance with the school and local community, the support is planned around genuine needs, and the gifts are chosen with practicality in mind. 

Most importantly, the children can simply be children—playing, laughing, eating and spending time with visitors in an appropriate setting.

That's what responsible giving looks like to us: less handing things out, more giving back.
