What To Do in Cat Ba in Autumn

Autumn is one of those seasons where you don't necessarily need to pick one activity and stick to it.

You can spend one day cruising around Lan Ha Bay, another hiking through the national park, and another cycling around the island looking for somewhere good to eat. 

Or you can do absolutely nothing for a few hours. Cat Ba has room for both.

1. Explore Lan Ha Bay

If you're coming to Cat Ba, Lan Ha Bay should be high on your list.

The bay is packed with limestone karsts, small islands, hidden beaches, and calm stretches of water. 

Seeing it from a boat gives you a completely different perspective of the landscape, with plenty of opportunities to stop for swimming, explore quieter corners, and simply enjoy being out on the water.

Autumn is a particularly pleasant time for a full day on the bay, as temperatures are more comfortable than during the peak summer heat.

3. Hike in Cat Ba National Park

Not everything on Cat Ba happens at sea level.

Cat Ba National Park covers a large part of the island and offers hiking routes through its forested limestone landscape, making it a good change of pace after a day on the water.

September to November is a comfortable period for exploring the park, particularly as temperatures become more manageable and the summer humidity starts to ease. 

October and November are especially appealing if hiking is one of your main reasons for visiting.

Just keep an eye on the weather. Limestone gets slippery remarkably quickly after rain, so give wet trails the respect they deserve.  

4. Find a Quiet Beach

After all that kayaking and hiking, you may decide that your main activity should be lying horizontally. Fair enough.

Cat Ba has several beaches where you can slow things down, swim, read a book, or watch the sun go down. 

September and October are particularly good for swimming, while the sea becomes noticeably cooler in November. 

So, if swimming is your priority, head earlier in autumn. If you're more interested in sitting by the sea and doing very little, November can be just as appealing.

5. Get Out and Explore the Island

Don't make the mistake of treating Cat Ba as somewhere you only visit for a cruise.

The island itself is worth exploring, too.

Hire a bike, travel through quieter areas, stop for food, wander around local villages, and take your time between the beaches, viewpoints, and national park. 

You don't need a rigid itinerary here. Some of the best parts of Cat Ba are simply the bits between the places you planned to visit.

Autumn's cooler temperatures make this much more enjoyable than attempting a full day of island exploration in the middle of July while slowly becoming one with your own sweat.

September, October or November: Which Month Is Best in Autumn?

If you're choosing between the three, here's the short version:

September — Warmest, but watch the weather.

25–30°C | Sea: 29.2°C | Rain: 289 mm

September still feels like summer, so it's a great choice for swimming and kayaking. 

However, it's still towards the end of the storm season, meaning boat trips can be affected by bad weather. 

Vietnam's National Day on 2 September can also make Cat Ba busier, although crowds drop off after the holiday.

October — our pick.

22–28°C | Sea: 27.1°C | Rain: 138 mm

This is the sweet spot: warm enough for swimming, much more comfortable for hiking and exploring, and considerably drier than September. 

It's also outside the main domestic summer rush, making October our favourite all-round month for Cat Ba.

November — coolest and quietest.

19–25°C | Sea: 24.9°C | Rain: 69 mm

November is better suited to hiking, cycling, photography, and exploring the island than spending all day in the water. 

Swimming is still possible, but if warm seas are a priority, September or October are the better bet.

What Should You Pack for Cat Ba in Autumn?

For September and October, pack lightweight clothes, swimwear, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, and a light waterproof layer.

For November, add a light jacket or jumper for mornings and evenings.

If you're planning to hike, bring proper footwear rather than attempting a national park trail in your nicest pair of white trainers.  

And even in autumn, a lightweight rain jacket is worth having. Weather can change quickly, particularly in September.
