Cat Ba Island Itinerary for Backpackers: How to Spend 2 or 3 Days

So, I’ve got a friend meeting me in Vietnam in a few days and, besides the Ha Giang Loop, one of the places she really wants to see is the limestone islets and turquoise bays just off Cat Ba Island.
And maybe I’ve been underestimating this nearby island. It’s got a lot going for it, with all the beauty of Ha Long Bay wrapped up in Lan Ha Bay, plus cliffs, beaches, jungle trails, history, caves, water activities and plenty of excuses to eat seafood by the water.
But how long should you spend here, and how do you fit everything in without spending your entire trip on a boat?
This Cat Ba Island itinerary covers two days of exploring, with an optional third day for hiking, caves and discovering more of the island.
So, if you want to know how my friend and I will be doing it (while mostly sticking to a backpacker’s budget), here’s how I’m planning our trip.
Where to Stay on Cat Ba Island
If you're travelling around northern Vietnam on a backpacker's budget, Cat Ba Town is a convenient base. You'll have restaurants, bars, tour operators, and transport connections nearby, without needing to move accommodation every night.
Our recommendation: Secret Garden Hostel
The Secret Garden is a social backpacker spot in the centre of Cat Ba Town. It has dorm beds and private rooms, a garden swimming pool, a restaurant and bar, and breakfast, making it a handy place to recharge between boat trips and hikes.
It's also a good base if you're travelling solo and fancy meeting other backpackers rather than spending your evenings entertaining yourself.

Your 2-Day Cat Ba Island Itinerary
Two days gives you enough time to experience the main highlights: Cat Ba Town, the beaches, and Lan Ha Bay.
You'll need to plan your arrival carefully, though, particularly if you want to fit in a boat trip the following morning.
Day 1: Arrive, Explore Cat Ba Town, and Hit the Beach
Morning: Travel from Hanoi to Cat Ba
If you're travelling from Hanoi, we'd recommend booking through Bong Hostel who can arrange an early bus and ferry combination.
It's one of the easiest options for backpackers, as your ticket usually covers the different parts of the journey.
Allow around four to five hours door to door, including the ferry crossing and possible waiting time.
An early departure should leave you with some time to explore Cat Ba Town and perhaps a visit to one of the nearby beaches on your first afternoon.
If you're arriving later, keep things simple with a walk around town and a yummy meal.

Afternoon: Explore Cat Ba Town and Visit a Beach
Once you've checked into your accommodation, drop off your bag and head out to explore.
Cat Ba Town is a handy base for finding food, arranging boat trips, and getting around the island. Wander along the waterfront, grab a Vietnamese coffee, and find somewhere for lunch.
If the weather is good, head to one of the Cat Co beaches for a swim and a bit of downtime. After travelling, you might appreciate doing absolutely nothing for an hour or two.
If you'd rather explore than sunbathe, Cannon Fort is another option for panoramic views across the town and surrounding bays.

Evening: What to Eat on Cat Ba Island
You can't visit an island without trying some of the seafood, can you? Cat Ba has plenty to choose from, but there are a few dishes worth looking out for while you're here.
Grilled squid (mực nướng) is a good place to start. Look for squid grilled over charcoal and served with salt, pepper, chilli, and lime.
If you're after something a little more local, try bánh đa cua, a Hai Phong speciality made with crab broth and distinctive flat, often reddish-brown noodles.
Seafood lovers should also look out for grilled oysters (hàu nướng mỡ hành), usually topped with spring onion oil and sometimes peanuts.
Or, if you're travelling with friends, order a seafood hotpot (lẩu hải sản) to share. Expect a bubbling pot of broth, seafood, vegetables, and noodles—perfect for a relaxed dinner after a day exploring the island.
If you're staying at Secret Garden Hostel, its on-site restaurant and bar offer a convenient option when you don't fancy heading back into town to find dinner. The hostel also advertises a bún chả nem cooking class if you'd like to have a go at making Vietnamese food yourself.
Otherwise, wander around Cat Ba Town and look for local restaurants serving regional noodle dishes and fresh seafood. You don't need to splash out on a huge seafood platter every evening to eat well here.
Day 2: Explore Lan Ha Bay by Boat
If there's one experience we'd prioritise during a short visit to Cat Ba, it's getting out onto Lan Ha Bay.
The bay is famous for its limestone karsts, small islands, and emerald-green water, and a boat trip is one of the best ways to experience it.
Look for a full-day cruise departing from Cat Ba, with kayaking, swimming, and lunch included.
With Bong Hostel you can also visit Viet Hai Village, a traditional village tucked away among the island's forested hills. It's a chance to see a quieter side of Cat Ba beyond the beaches and busy town.
A full-day boat trip is a great option if you'd like to experience the bay without paying for an overnight cruise.
After your boat trip, you can return to Cat Ba Town for dinner or continue your journey if you've arranged transport that fits the tour's finish time.

What if you'd rather go hiking?
If exploring Cat Ba National Park is a bigger priority than spending the day on a boat, you could swap these activities around.
Just remember that a full-day cruise and a proper national park visit are difficult to combine comfortably in a 2-day stay.
If you can spare another night, we'd recommend doing both.

3-Day Cat Ba Itinerary: How to Spend an Extra Day on the Island
Got another day on Cat Ba? Spend it exploring the island’s inland scenery, with a hike through Cat Ba National Park and a visit to one of its caves.
Hike to Ngu Lam Peak
If you fancy swapping the beach for a bit of exercise, head to Cat Ba National Park and follow the trail to Ngu Lam Peak.
The hike takes you through forest before opening up to views across the island’s green, rugged landscape.
Allow a few hours for the visit, including time to get to the park, complete the hike and enjoy the views.
Visit Trung Trang Cave
After your hike, you can make a quick stop at Trung Trang Cave, which is around 1 km south of Cat Ba National Park headquarters and roughly 12 km from Cat Ba Town.
The cave is easy to combine with a visit to the national park, and you can spend around 30 minutes to an hour exploring its limestone formations.
It also has an interesting history: during the Vietnam War, a naval communications unit used the cave to house radio equipment and station troops between 1964 and 1968.
You might also hear it called Bat Cave, thanks to the bats that live inside. And if you’re interested in the island’s history, local legend links the cave’s name to Lady Trung Trang, who is said to have helped defend Cat Ba before settling in the cave to protect the island.
Entry is included in the Cat Ba National Park ticket, so you can combine the two without planning a separate trip.

What About Hospital Cave?
If you’re interested in Cat Ba’s wartime history, Hospital Cave is another place worth visiting.
As its name suggests, the cave was used as a secret hospital during the Vietnam War, which shows how the island’s natural landscape was used for protection during the conflict.
It’s a separate stop from Trung Trang Cave, so you’ll need to allow extra time to visit both. If you’re trying to fit the national park and a cave into one day, choose whichever interests you most—or leave Hospital Cave for another visit if you’d rather not rush.
Finish With Some Beach Time
If you still have energy, head back towards Cat Ba Town for a swim or a relaxed afternoon at one of the Cat Co beaches.
After a busy couple of days exploring, you might be ready to do very little at all, which is perfectly acceptable on an island holiday.
If you have more time to explore, our guide to the top things to do on Cat Ba Island covers more ways to spend your time here.

Want to See Both Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay?
If you fancy seeing both bays, Bong Hostel also offers the Amanda Luxury Cruise, a 2-day, 1-night trip from Hanoi combining Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, with activities such as kayaking, swimming, and an overnight stay in a cabin.
It’s a treat if you want a more luxurious cruise experience, but if your main focus is exploring Cat Ba Island on a backpacker’s budget, I’d stick with the itinerary above.
Just bear in mind that the cruise returns to Tuan Chau Marina on Day 2 rather than Cat Ba Town, so you’ll need to arrange onward transport separately if you want to visit the island afterwards.
How to Get Around Cat Ba Island
Cat Ba Town is easy to explore on foot, but you'll need transport to reach places further across the island, including Cat Ba National Park and Hospital Cave.
Here are your main options:
Walking: Best for exploring Cat Ba Town, finding restaurants, and visiting nearby areas on foot.
Motorbike or Scooter: A flexible way to reach the national park and other attractions independently. Only ride if you're legally permitted and confident on the local roads.
Taxi: A useful alternative if you don't want to ride. Agree on the fare or confirm the price before setting off, particularly for journeys outside town.
Organised tours: Convenient for boat trips and excursions where transport is included. Check exactly where the tour starts and finishes before booking.
How Much Does a Cat Ba Island Trip Cost?
Cat Ba can suit a range of budgets, depending on your accommodation, transport, and the activities you choose.
Here are a few current price points to help you plan:
Expense | Example cost |
Shared bus and ferry from Hanoi | 350,000-400,000 VND per person |
Taxi from Cat Ba Town to the national park | Approximately 150,000–200,000 VND each way |
Cat Ba National Park admission | 160,000 VND per adult (full ticket) |
Bong's Serenity Grandeur full-day package | 1,700,000 VND per person, including Hanoi return transfers (price at the time of publishing) always check for current prices |
Prices are based on published information available in October 2026 and may change.
You'll also need to budget for accommodation, meals, drinks, and local transport. Dorm prices vary with dates and availability, so check current rates before booking rather than relying on a fixed figure.
If you're travelling on a backpacker's budget, staying in Cat Ba Town, eating at local restaurants, and choosing a full-day boat trip instead of an overnight luxury cruise can help keep costs under control.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Cat Ba?
Cat Ba can be visited throughout the year, but the best time depends on what you want to do.
Spring and autumn can offer a good balance for exploring, with more comfortable conditions for hiking and sightseeing.
Summer is popular for beach trips and swimming, but it can be hot, humid, and busy.
Winter tends to be cooler, and boat trips or swimming plans may be affected by the weather.
Conditions at sea can change, so don't assume every cruise or kayaking trip will operate exactly as planned.
If you're travelling between September and November, our guide to visiting Cat Ba in autumn covers seasonal weather, swimming conditions, and what to expect.

Is Two or Three Days Better for Cat Ba Island?
If you're mainly interested in Lan Ha Bay and a little time on the beach, two days can work well.
But if you want to experience the island itself, we'd choose three days. You'll have time to explore the bay, hike in Cat Ba National Park, visit a cave or explore the countryside, and enjoy the town without trying to cram everything into a single afternoon.
Cat Ba is more than a place to board a boat before heading somewhere else. Give it a little time, and you'll discover a destination that's worth exploring in its own right.
And if you're planning your northern Vietnam adventure from Hanoi, Bong Hostel can help you organise your Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay trip.
