Cao Bang Weather in Autumn: September, October & November
Cao Bang
Planning a trip to Cao Bang in autumn? Here's everything you need to know!

As autumn arrives in northern Vietnam, the Cao Bang Loop deserves a spot on every Southeast Asia backpacker's to-do list.

The summer rains have eased up, temperatures are becoming a little cooler, which is much more comfortable, and the mountains are beginning to turn gold with the approaching harvest.

But September, October, and November don't all feel quite the same, especially when you're travelling through the mountains.

So, what is Cao Bang weather in autumn actually like?

We've broken down September, October, and November so you know what to expect, what to pack, and which month might be best for your Cao Bang Loop adventure.

What Is The Weather Like In Cao Bang In Autumn?

Autumn in Cao Bang runs from roughly September to November, but there's quite a difference between the start and end of the season.

September is still hanging onto the summer rainy season, so you can expect warm, humid days and the occasional heavy shower.

October is when things really start to settle down, with less rain and more comfortable temperatures.

By November, it's noticeably cooler, particularly in the mornings and evenings.

If you're trying to decide which month to visit, here's the quick version.

Month

Daytime temperatures

What to expect

September

Around 26–29°C

Warmer, wetter, lush scenery

October

Around 25–26°C

Milder, generally drier

November

Around 21–22°C

Cooler, generally drier

These are typical figures rather than a promise from the weather gods. Cao Bang is mountainous, so conditions can change depending on where you are, particularly when you leave the city and start climbing.

And that's worth remembering when you're checking the forecast. A weather app telling you it's sunny in Cao Bang City doesn't necessarily mean the mountain road you're heading towards has received the memo.

Cao Bang Weather In September

September is technically the beginning of autumn in Cao Bang, but it doesn't always feel particularly autumnal just yet.

The weather is still warm, and the tail end of the summer rainy season can bring some serious downpours, which means waterfalls still look amazing and everything is still lush and green.

But there's a reason we don't recommend September as the best time to tackle the Cao Bang Loop.

Is September Still Rainy In Cao Bang?

Yes, and this is something worth taking seriously if you're planning a mountain trip.

September is considerably wetter than October and November, and heavy rainfall in Cao Bang can lead to flooding and landslides, particularly on the mountain roads.

These conditions can continue into September even as the rainy season starts to ease.

That doesn't mean it'll rain all day, every day. You can still have sunny spells, and the province can look absolutely spectacular at this time of year.

But weather conditions can change quickly, and a few hours of heavy rain can make a big difference to the roads.

If you're visiting Cao Bang in September, we'd recommend keeping your plans flexible and checking local conditions rather than relying solely on a forecast for Cao Bang City.

Why Does Bong Pause The Cao Bang Loop In September?

This is also why Bong Hostel pauses our Cao Bang Loop and Secret Tour until October.

We'd rather wait until the weather and road conditions have improved than send people off into the mountains during a period when heavy rain can cause flooding, landslides, and difficult riding conditions.

If you're travelling independently, the later part of September may be a better bet than the beginning of the month, as rainfall generally starts to ease. But there's still no guarantee of dry weather, so we'd keep your plans flexible.

If you're not tied to September, we'd recommend waiting until October. The weather is generally more settled, temperatures are comfortable, and you still get plenty of the dramatic scenery that makes Cao Bang worth the journey.

And if you're looking for something a little different, our Bong Hostel Secret Tour takes you beyond the usual tourist route and into some of the quieter corners of the province.

Is September Good For The Cao Bang Loop?

For us, September isn't the month we'd choose for a multi-day mountain trip. Although the scenery can be spectacular, the weather remains unpredictable.

If you're an experienced rider travelling independently, the later part of September may be a better option than the beginning of the month.

But if you have the flexibility, we'd recommend waiting until October.

Cao Bang Weather In October

If you ask us to pick one month for weather in Cao Bang in Autumn, October is a very strong contender.

The temperature is much more comfortable, rainfall drops significantly compared with September, and conditions are generally more settled.

Typical daytime temperatures sit around the mid-20s, while evenings are cool without usually being super cold.

October is particularly good for:

  • The Cao Bang Loop by motorbike

  • Trekking and walking

  • Photography

  • Visiting Ban Gioc Waterfall

  • Exploring rural valleys and villages

  • Long scenic drives through the mountains

It's also when the rice harvest occurs, which sees the green fields of summer turning a beautiful golden colour around late September and early October.

Is October A Good Time To Visit Cao Bang?

If you're looking for the best balance between comfortable weather and beautiful scenery, October is the sweet spot.

The heavy summer rains have eased, but the landscape hasn't lost the lushness created by the wet season. Temperatures are pleasant for long days outside, and generally drier conditions make mountain journeys more comfortable.

You can also get some lovely autumn light for photography, particularly when you're travelling through the valleys and rural areas.

Of course, this is still northern Vietnam, rain and fog can happen, and conditions can vary depending on where you are.

But if you forced us to pick one autumn month for a Cao Bang road trip, October would be a pretty easy choice.

What About Ban Gioc Waterfall In October?

October is a great time to visit Ban Gioc Waterfall, but don't assume the water will have suddenly calmed down just because the rainy season is ending.

The waterfall is at its fullest during the June to September rainy season, but October can still bring seriously impressive water flow.

When I visited in October last year, the water was so powerful that we had to stand much further back, and the area where you would normally walk was completely submerged.

What you can generally expect from October is a mix of strong water flow, clearer conditions, and autumn scenery. The exact flow will depend on how much rain Cao Bang has had in the weeks beforehand.

So if Ban Gioc is high on your list, October is a great compromise. You can still see the waterfall at its dramatic best, while travelling conditions are generally more favourable than during the height of the rainy season.

Cao Bang Weather In November

November is where autumn starts to feel properly cool.

Typical daytime temperatures fall to around 21–22°C, while mornings and evenings can be noticeably colder.

Rainfall is generally low, making it a good month for road trips, sightseeing, and exploring the countryside without the persistent wet-weather concerns of summer.

Just remember that the further into November you travel, the more useful those extra layers you thought you wouldn’t need become.

November Buckwheat Season

Even though the golden rice fields have largely disappeared by November, there's still something else blooming.

Buckwheat flowers appear across parts of northern Vietnam from around October to December, with November typically being the peak of the blooming season.

The flowers add another splash of colour to the mountain landscapes, with patches of pink, white, and purple appearing across the rocky highlands, valleys, and hills.

It's another reason November can be a particularly beautiful time to explore the region, especially if you're travelling through the rural areas of Cao Bang.

Is Cao Bang Cold In November?

It can be, particularly in the early morning and after sunset.

November isn't usually freezing in Cao Bang, but mountain conditions can feel considerably cooler than travellers expect from Vietnam.

The difference is especially noticeable if you're travelling by motorbike. Sitting in moving air for several hours makes a cool morning feel much colder than it really is.

A fleece, light jacket that stops the wind, and trousers are sensible additions, particularly if you're starting your day early.

Is Autumn The Best Time To Visit Cao Bang?

Realistically, there's no single “best” month for everyone. The right time to visit depends on the weather you're comfortable with, how much time you have, your budget, and what you want to get out of your trip.

But for a lot of backpackers, yes, autumn is one of the best times to do the Cao Bang Loop, because it offers the best balance between weather, scenery, and travel conditions.

You get:

  • Cooler temperatures than summer

  • Less rainfall as the season progresses

  • Generally more favourable road conditions

  • Comfortable days outdoors

  • Good opportunities for photography

  • Beautiful rice-field scenery

  • Strong waterfall flow earlier in the season

  • Seasonal flowers

  • Excellent conditions for road trips

The important distinction is between the three autumn months:

  • September is still partly rainy, but the countryside is incredibly green and waterfalls remain powerful.

  • October is the sweet spot, with milder temperatures, significantly less rain, and excellent conditions for exploring.

  • November is cooler and drier, with chilly mornings and evenings but comfortable daytime temperatures.

So rather than asking whether autumn is good for Cao Bang, it's worth asking which version of autumn you want.

What Should You Pack For Cao Bang In Autumn?

The trick to packing for Cao Bang in autumn is to bring layers.

We recommend bringing:

  • Lightweight T-shirts

  • Comfortable trousers or hiking trousers that zip off into shorts

  • A light fleece or hoodie

  • A warm thermal layer if you’re travelling in November

  • A lightweight waterproof jacket

  • Comfortable shoes with good grip

  • Socks and underwear (of course)

  • Pyjamas

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat

  • Gloves and a scarf if travelling at the end of the autumn season

  • A small waterproof bag or dry bag for electronics

If you're travelling by motorbike, don't underestimate the importance of a windproof outer layer. Twenty-something degrees can feel considerably colder when you're moving through exposed mountain roads.

What Is Autumn Like for Riding in Cao Bang?

Autumn is a great time to explore Cao Bang by motorbike. As the heavier summer rains ease, road conditions are generally more favourable, temperatures are more comfortable, and you're less likely to spend the day riding through heavy rain.

That doesn't mean the mountains suddenly become predictable, though. Fog, rain, and slippery roads can still appear, particularly around higher passes, so it's important to stay flexible and take conditions as they come.

If you're not an experienced rider, we'd recommend an Easy Rider. You can sit back and enjoy the scenery without having to concentrate on every bend, pothole, gravel section, steep drop, and oncoming vehicle.

And if conditions aren't right for a particular route, don't force it. A missed viewpoint is considerably better than getting into an accident.

Bong Hostel runs Cao Bang tours with experienced drivers, so you can enjoy the mountain roads without having to navigate them yourself.

Autumn Weather At Cao Bang's Main Attractions

The weather can change the experience of Cao Bang's biggest attractions, so it's worth thinking about what you want to see.

Ban Gioc Waterfall

Ban Gioc Waterfall is still powerful towards the end of the rainy season, while autumn offers a beautiful backdrop of green valleys and changing rice fields.

Water levels depend on recent rainfall, so conditions can vary considerably between visits.

God's Eye Mountain

God's Eye Mountain is another attraction that can be particularly interesting in autumn.

In late October and November, a lake may form around the mountain, creating the perfect conditions for a boat trip around God's Eye and seeing the landscape from a completely different angle.

Nguom Ngao Cave

Cao Bang's Tiger Cave, as the name translates, is a useful option when the weather isn't playing ball because, well, it's underground.

Rain can still affect the roads and paths outside, though, and surfaces around caves can be damp and slippery. Proper footwear is essential here.

Phong Nam Valley

Autumn is an excellent time to visit Phong Nam Valley, particularly if you're hoping to see rice fields changing colour.

Clear autumn days can also give you better views across the surrounding limestone mountains, making this a particularly good place to have your camera ready.

Lenin Stream

Lenin Stream is famous for its striking turquoise water, which winds through the green landscape at Pac Bo Historical Site.

It's a beautiful place to visit throughout the year, although the water and surrounding scenery can look different depending on recent rainfall and the season.

Autumn can be a lovely time to explore the area, particularly if you're lucky enough to catch a clear day when the water's colour really stands out.

The stream is also historically significant, as Ho Chi Minh lived and worked in the nearby Pac Bo area after returning to Vietnam in 1941.

Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda Viewpoint

If you're visiting Ban Gioc Waterfall, don't miss the viewpoint at Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda.

You'll need to walk up the hillside to reach the pagoda, but the views are worth the effort. From above, you can see the waterfall in its wider setting, with the Quay Son River winding through the valley and limestone mountains stretching into the distance.

It's a completely different perspective from standing at the foot of the falls, and a great spot to appreciate just how impressive the surrounding landscape is.
