Tips for Visiting Ninh Binh's Ancient Temples
Before diving into Ninh Binh’s ancient wonders, it's essential to keep a few tips in mind to ensure your visit is respectful and comfortable:
Dress Modestly: Temples in Ninh Binh are places of worship. Avoid wearing revealing clothing such as shorts, skirts, or tank tops. Cover your knees and shoulders to show respect.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: Temples are spread across large complexes or nestled deep in nature. Expect to walk a lot, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes.
Pack the Essentials: Protect yourself from the elements. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sunny days, or an umbrella for rain.
Respect Temple Rules: Food and drinks are not allowed inside temples, so be sure to eat beforehand.
6 Ancient Temples and Pagodas in Ninh Binh
1. Bai Dinh Pagoda
Location: Gia Vien District, Trang An
Bai Dinh Pagoda is the crown jewel of Ninh Binh, and it’s a must-see on any day trip to Ninh Binh.
This vast Buddhist complex is the largest in Southeast Asia, boasting over 500 statues of Buddha and the largest bronze Buddha statue in the region.
Though relatively new, having been built in 2003, Bai Dinh Pagoda has quickly become a major pilgrimage site for Vietnamese Buddhists.
Don’t miss the chance to climb to the top for panoramic views of the entire complex, framed by dramatic limestone mountains. It’s a humbling experience that blends modern spirituality with ancient natural beauty.
2. Trang An Scenic Landscape
Location: Trang An, Ninh Binh
For a magical journey through towering karst mountains and hidden temples, take a boat trip through Trang An.
The ancient temples here can only be reached by boat, making the journey a peaceful and uplifting experience.
As your rower guides you through the emerald waters, you’ll stop at small, mystical temples hidden among the cliffs.
Choose from three different routes, each offering a unique perspective on Ninh Binh’s spiritual landscape.
No matter which you choose, Trang An will leave a lasting impression on your soul.
3. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Location: Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh
Explore the remnants of Vietnam’s ancient capital at Hoa Lu, a site rich in history.
While the citadel has long since fallen into ruin, several important temples remain, including King Dinh Temple and King Le Temple.
Nestled among mountains and jungle, the temples are an oasis of calm and a window into Vietnam’s storied past.
Though smaller in scale compared to Bai Dinh, Hoa Lu’s temples carry a weight of historical significance, making them well worth a visit.

4. Bich Dong Pagoda
Location: Tam Coc, Ninh Binh
Tucked away in the scenic Tam Coc area, Bich Dong Pagoda is a must-visit for nature lovers and spiritual seekers.
Known as the “Pagoda of the Jade Cave,” Bich Dong is a cluster of ancient cave temples nestled into a limestone mountain.
A bridge over a peaceful lily pond leads to the entrance, making for a picture-perfect scene.
Climb the steps through the mountain to explore the upper temples, and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
5. Thai Vi Temple
Location: Tam Coc, Ninh Binh
Built in 1258 by King Tran Thai Tong, Thai Vi Temple is dedicated to the kings of the Tran Dynasty.
The temple is small but exquisitely crafted, with intricate stone carvings and an altar dedicated to the Tran rulers.
If you visit in March, you may witness the Thai Vi Temple Festival, an event filled with cultural performances and rituals that celebrate the Tran Dynasty’s victory over foreign invaders.
6. Mua Cave and Pagoda
Location: Mua Cave, Ninh Binh
Mua Cave is best known for its panoramic viewpoint, offering one of the most stunning vistas in the region.
After climbing over 500 stone steps, you’ll be greeted by sweeping views of Ninh Binh’s rice paddies and a river in the form of a lotus, all wrapped up in a big karst mountain bow.
Though small, the pagodas at the summit add a spiritual element to the experience, and you’ll often see locals leaving offerings and burning incense.
Be careful though, it can be quite challenging to reach the dragon pagoda. Make sure you have a decent level of fitness before attempting the Mua Cave steps.
