Ha Giang Loop weather is always a tricky one to determine; since weather in the mountains can be so unpredictable.
However, you are planning your Ha Giang Loop trip for the next couple of weeks and to make the most of your adventure, understanding what you can expect in terms of weather from August to September, is crucial.
That’s where we come in. Here’s another trusty Bong Hostel Survival Guide, with all the details on Ha Giang Loop weather, safety tips and why doing the loop at this time of year is still a good idea!
Understanding Ha Giang's Climate
Ha Giang’s climate is characterized by a tropical monsoon system, leading to significant rainfall and high humidity throughout the year. The weather varies across different altitudes; higher regions are cooler and colder, while lower areas experience warmer temperatures.
Weather Overview Throughout the Year
Spring (March to May): Temperatures range from 15°C to 28°C (59°F to 82°F) with moderate rainfall and occasional showers. The landscape blooms during this season and temperatures are relatively mild.
Summer (June to August): Expect temperatures between 22°C and 35°C (72°F to 95°F) with high rainfall, frequent downpours, and thunderstorms. The landscape is lush and green, but road conditions can be challenging.
Autumn (September to November): Temperatures drop to 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F) with moderate to low rainfall. The weather is cooler and drier, making it ideal for riding, and the terraced rice fields turn golden as they approach harvest.
Winter (December to February): Temperatures can drop to 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F) with low rainfall, but mist and fog are common. Despite the cold, the mountains offer a peaceful beauty with mist-covered valleys.
Ha Giang Loop Weather: August to September
Temperature and Rainfall
As you can see, August and September actually fall into two different seasons. Between these two months, Ha Giang experiences a transition from the peak of the rainy summer season in August to the onset of drier autumnal weather in September.
August: Characterized by high temperatures, often reaching up to the upper 30s°C (90s°F) in the lower valleys, and heavy rainfall. The humidity is high, and frequent downpours or thunderstorms are common. The consistent rainfall can cause fog in higher areas, especially around the Dong Van Plateau, reducing visibility.
September: As autumn approaches, the weather becomes cooler and drier. Daytime temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F). Rainfall decreases significantly, making the roads less slippery and more navigable. The clear skies offer better visibility, and the air becomes crisper and cooler.
Best Activities and Highlights: August to September
Seasonal Beauty: Summer into Autumn
Despite the drastic differences in weather, the months of August and September both have their own distinct seasonal beauty and charm.
In August the region’s lush greenery is at its peak due to the monsoon rains. The mountains, rice terraces, and fields are vibrantly green, offering stunning scenic views. And the fog that envelops the Dong Van Plateau adds a moody touch to all your photographs.
By September this bright green canvas has growing flecks of gold as the rice fields approach their harvest. The grains mature and sparkle in the increasing sunshine, swaying on the stalks throughout the valleys. It's a true marvel created by the patience and devotion of the local villagers.
Local Dishes
Ha Giang's cuisine, made from fresh and locally sourced ingredients, is another highlight. There are plenty of traditional dishes to be enjoyed such as a warm bowl of Phở or a plate of freshly prepared spring rolls. But there are also unique local specialties, like Lẩu gà đen (Black Chicken Hotpot) and Thắng Dền.

Visiting Ethnic Villages
The Ha Giang region is a melting pot of culture. The Mong, Tay, and Dao Cham people are just a few of the 17 different ethnic groups that call this area home. Their traditions, such as the Mong people’s maize wine and the La Chi’s buffalo horn rituals, offer a unique glimpse into their way of life.
Visiting these villages allows you to witness some of these cultural practices in their natural setting. During the rainy season in August you may be invited to enter some of the traditional homes as you pass through the village—a great way to experience the communities customs and lifestyles firsthand, and seek shelter from the rain.
As the weather on the Ha Giang Loop changes in September, becoming drier and cooler, conditions are even more favorable for interacting with locals and enjoying seasonal activities like festivals.
Adventure and Thrill
For adventure seekers, the challenging weather in August adds an extra layer of thrill to the Ha Giang Loop. Navigating through fog, rain, and slippery roads requires skill and caution, but the sense of accomplishment is immensely rewarding.
As the weather improves in September, the roads become more manageable, offering a different kind of thrill with clearer skies and better visibility.
