If you love coffee and you’re planning a trip to North Vietnam, prepare to be blown away and spoilt for choice by the amount of incredible coffee shops on offer.
Known for its deep-rooted coffee culture, Hanoi has a wide mix of traditional and modern coffee shops, each offering a unique experience. Whether you’re seeking out an authentic Vietnamese coffee experience, a quiet, cozy corner to get some work done, or a trendy Instagram hot-spot, Hanoi’s coffee scene has it all.
In this blog post, we’ll explore 30 of the best coffee shops in Hanoi—and what experience they’re the best for—to provide the ultimate guide to the city’s renowned coffee shop culture in 2024.
Coffee Culture in Vietnam
Coffee is more than just a beverage in Vietnam – it’s an integral part of daily life. Introduced by the French in the 1850s, coffee quickly became popular across the country. Today, Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee producer, known primarily for its Robusta beans, which are higher in caffeine and have a stronger, more bitter flavor than the Arabica variety.
Coffee shops in Hanoi are not just places to grab a quick caffeine fix. They are central to the city’s social fabric, serving as gathering spots for friends, families, and even business meetings. You’ll often find locals sitting on small stools outside a café, chatting over cups of coffee, or working quietly on their laptops inside.
The café culture in Hanoi is also a reflection of the city’s creative spirit. Many coffee shops showcase local art, host live music, and provide a space for language exchanges or book clubs. Some cafés even double as coworking spaces, offering a quiet place for digital nomads to work.
Unique Vietnamese Coffee Drinks
When visiting coffee shops in Hanoi, you'll find a wide range of coffee drinks that are distinct to Vietnam. Here are some of the must-try beverages:
Iced Coffee with Condensed Milk: One of the most popular Vietnamese coffee drinks, this is a sweet and creamy treat made by mixing robusta coffee with condensed milk and ice. Its rich flavor and smooth texture make it a perfect way to cool off on a hot day.
Egg Coffee: A Hanoi specialty, egg coffee was created during a milk shortage in the 1940s. It’s made by whipping egg yolks with sugar and condensed milk, then pouring this rich, creamy mixture over strong coffee. The result is a velvety and decadent drink that's almost dessert-like until you get to the actual coffee—then its intensity will knock your socks off!
Coconut Coffee: For a tropical twist, try coconut coffee, which blends icy coconut cream with black coffee. This drink is refreshing and indulgent, perfect for warm afternoons in Hanoi.
Salt Coffee: Although less well-known, salt coffee is a surprising combination of sweet, salty, and strong flavors. It features a layer of salted cream foam on top of coffee, offering a unique flavor profile reminiscent of salted caramel.

Coffee Brewing Methods in Hanoi
Hanoi's coffee shops use a variety of brewing techniques, with the traditional Vietnamese Phin filter being the most iconic. This slow-drip method involves placing a small metal filter over a cup, where hot water is poured over ground coffee, allowing it to slowly seep through. The result is a bold, rich coffee that's perfect for savoring over long conversations.
More modern coffee shops in Hanoi also embrace third-wave brewing methods like pour-over, AeroPress, and espresso machines. Whether you prefer your coffee the traditional way or are looking to try more contemporary styles, you will definitely find something that suits your taste in Hanoi.
