1. How many people are in the Bong Group Tour?
Our tour groups typically range from 10 to 20 guests per group, ensuring a sociable yet manageable size.
We organize 2 to 4 groups departing daily, combining both self-driving and easy-rider options.
Although groups depart separately, they reconvene at homestays at the end of each day, providing ample opportunities to socialize and share experiences.
2. How long does it take to complete the Ha Giang Loop?
The Ha Giang Loop can be completed in 3 or 4 days, depending on which Bong Hostel tour you choose.
The 3-day tour covers more ground each day, while the 4-day tour allows for a more leisurely pace with additional stops and activities.
Choosing between a 3-day tour and a 4-day tour depends on how much you want to see and the pace you prefer.
3-Day Tour: This tour departs at 9:00 am and involves a long drive of approximately 145 km back to Ha Giang city on the last day. The faster pace means fewer stops at attractions like waterfalls, but it's ideal if you're short on time.
4-Day Tour: This tour covers around 90 km per day, allowing for a more relaxed pace. You’ll have time for additional activities and attractions such as river boat tours, Tu San Canyon, and Du Gia Waterfall. Despite being only one day longer, it offers a richer experience with more sightseeing and fun.
For a more detailed comparison, check out our recent blog post on the differences between our 3-day and 4-day tours.
3. What type of accommodation is available on the Tour?
During the tour, you will stay in comfortable homestays, which are included in the price, where you can experience the local culture firsthand. Our homestays provide:
Dormitory-style rooms: Accommodating 6 to 15 guests, these mixed gender rooms are equipped with all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay.
Private rooms: Available for an additional charge, offering extra privacy and comfort.
Towels and clean linens: Provided at all homestays.
4. Is the Tour suitable for solo travelers?
Yes, at Bong Hostel our Ha Giang Loop tours are designed to be inclusive and welcoming. Solo travelers often find it easy to make new friends and share the adventure with others.
Our group tours are also popular amongst friends and couples and we welcome various ages starting from 18 years old.
This diversity makes for a lively and inclusive atmosphere where you can make new friends and share the adventure with like-minded people.
5. What transfers are included in the Bong Hostel Tour?
Our tour package includes sleeper bus transportation from Hanoi to Ha Giang. Pickup is available at Bong Hanoi Hostel in the Old Quarter in the morning, afternoon, and evening, with the journey taking 7-8 hours.
For those looking for an upgrade, we offer:
Cabin buses (11:00 am and 7:30 pm departures)
Limousine buses (6:00 am and 3:00 pm departures)
Return transportation to Hanoi departs at 7:00 pm from Bong Ha Giang Hostel on the same day the tour ends.
Additionally, we offer bus tickets for other destinations such as Halong, Cat Ba, Ninh Binh, and Sapa. Fees vary depending on the destination and bus type, but they typically start from 250,000 VND per person.
For more information on transport to Ha Giang, click here: How to Get to Ha Giang from Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, and Cat Ba Island.
6. What are the differences between the Buses?
Sleeper Bus: 44-bed regular sleeper bus. Ideal for budget travelers looking for a basic, comfortable journey.
Limousine Bus: 12-20 seat bus offering more space and comfort, perfect for a more relaxed travel experience.
Cabin Bus: VIP sleeper bus with 24 single cabins equipped with curtains and wifi, offering privacy and extra amenities.
7. If I get an overnight bus to Ha Giang, can I still check in at Bong Hostel?
Yes, we have night porters at our Bong Ha Giang and Bong Hanoi Hostel, so you can check in upon your early morning arrival.
Breakfast is served from 8:00 am to 9:30 am, and the tour departs at 10:00 am, giving you time to rest and prepare for the journey.
8. Is the first night at Bong Ha Giang Hostel free?
Yes, you will receive one free night at our Bong Hostel in Ha Giang before starting the loop.
This accommodation is in a mixed dorm room with comfortable beds, ensuring you’re well-rested before your adventure begins.

9. Can I store my backpack at Bong Ha Giang Hostel?
Absolutely! You can leave your backpack at our hostel free of charge during your loop tour. You can either rent or use your own padlock to securely store them in our downstairs luggage storage.
We recommend bringing a small backpack for the 3-4 day trip, which can be securely attached to the back of the motorbike and comes with a rain cover. If you don’t have a small backpack, you can borrow one from us, also free of charge.
10. What Should I Bring for the Loop?
Packing the right items is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable trip.
Key items include:
Weather-appropriate clothing: The weather can change quickly, so bring layers.
Sturdy shoes: Suitable for walking and motorbiking.
Rain gear: Essential for staying dry during unexpected showers.
Personal hygiene items: Toothbrush, toothpaste, and other toiletries.
First aid kit: Personal medicines, sunscreen, insect repellent, and supplies for any minor injuries or illnesses.
Camera or smartphone: To capture the stunning scenery.
Power bank: To keep your devices charged on the go.
For detailed information on what to pack, refer to our blog post: What to Pack for the Ha Giang Loop: The Ultimate Guide.
11. How much money should I take on the Ha Giang Loop?
All meals (and Happy Water) are included in the loop tour but we recommend bringing extra cash (1,000,000 VND minimum) for personal expenses such as snacks, drinks, and tips.
ATMs are available in Ha Giang city, but it's wise to withdraw cash before starting the loop or even coming to Ha Giang, just in case ATMs are not working—thing’s are a little more authentic in the North!
12. Should I tip my easy rider or tour leader?
While tipping isn't customary (or expected) in Vietnam, it is highly appreciated.
A good rule of thumb is $10-$15 USD per day of the tour or about 10% of your tour price. But of course, it is all personal preference. If you don’t want to tip that is completely up to you and if you do then even a little goes a long way!
13. What is the food like on the Ha Giang Loop?
On our Ha Giang Loop tour, you'll find delicious Vietnamese cuisine.
Our tour leaders choose the restaurants and order meals family-style, offering a variety of local dishes to sample, including meat, vegetables, and rice.
They can accommodate dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free diets as well as any allergies.
You’ll also encounter Happy Water, a popular rice wine in Vietnam. Mot Hai Ba Zo!!
14. Is there cell service on the Ha Giang Loop?
Surprisingly, cell service is available throughout most of the Ha Giang Loop. We recommend using Viettel, since it covers Northern Vietnam.
15. Should I get an easy-rider or drive myself?
Choosing between the easy rider and self driving options depends on your comfort level and experience with motorbikes.
Easy Rider: If you're not confident in your riding skills or prefer to relax and enjoy the scenery, opting for an easy rider is a great choice. You'll have an experienced local driver who knows the route well, ensuring your safety and allowing you to take in the views.
Self Rider: If you have experience with motorbikes and feel comfortable navigating the winding mountain roads, driving yourself offers the freedom to explore at your own pace. Keep in mind that the roads can be challenging, so assess your skills honestly.

16. Can I do a Bong Hostel Ha Giang Loop Tour by car?

However, travelling by car can limit your access to some of the narrower, more scenic routes that motorbikes can easily navigate.

17. What’s right for me: Private Tour vs. Group Tour?
Private Tour: Ideal for those who prefer a more personalized experience. You can customize the itinerary and pace to suit your preferences. Private tours are great for couples, families, or small groups of friends.
Group Tour: Offers a more social experience, allowing you to meet fellow travelers and share the adventure. Group tours are well-organized, with set itineraries and the chance to make new friends along the way.
18. Do Ha Giang Loop guides speak English?
Yes, at both our hostels our staff have an impeccable level of English, and many are English-speaking volunteers from overseas. If you have any queries they are more than willing to assist you!
On the loop our tour guides have a really good level of English, so you will always be informed of what is happening throughout your tour.
Many of our easy riders also speak some level of English, though proficiency can vary. But they are always willing to learn and will often come to you with a really cute translation about the scenery, or life tips in general!
We recommend making google translate your third wheel and teaching each other some new phrases, you can learn Vietnamese and they can learn your language!
19. What is the weather like in Ha Giang right now?
Ahhh, our most popular question, and we understand your concerns, but we are not weather forecasters—sorry! The weather along the Ha Giang Loop can vary greatly depending on the season.
For current weather updates, please check a reliable weather forecasting service closer to your departure date. Or keep an eye on our social media pages as we do update them regularly with real time images!

20. When is the best time to do the Ha Giang Loop tour?
Generally, the best time to do the Ha Giang Loop is during the dry seasons from October to April. During these months, you can expect clear skies and pleasant weather, ideal for motorbiking and sightseeing.
The rainy season, from May to September, can make the roads slippery and challenging to navigate. But there are plenty of positive aspects of visiting in the off season too, if you don’t mind a little rain!
21. Do I need a motorbike license to rent a bike with Bong Hostel?
Yes, you need a valid international motorbike license with the appropriate A1 stamp to rent a bike with Bong Hostel in Vietnam.

22. Is the Ha Giang Loop safe?
The Ha Giang Loop is generally very safe, along the way you’ll encounter nothing but kindness and hospitality from the local people.
However, the roads can be quite dangerous if you are not confident in your abilities and aren’t familiar with the route. Some sections offer smooth pavement and others are under construction or more rugged.
By booking a tour your chances of staying safe on the roads are significantly increased, as we prioritize your safety at all times. As a self rider, drive carefully, especially in wet conditions, and follow your guide's instructions to ensure a safe journey.
23. Is the Ha Giang Loop touristy?
The Ha Giang Loop is less busy and touristy than other areas of Northern Vietnam, like Sapa and Ha Long Bay, but it is gaining popularity.
